Larry Karisny, Director of ProjectSafety, has focused on the need to secure smart ecosystems for over decade, and now he’s returing to the IoT Evolution Expo in Orlando, Florida from January 22 to 25. His not-for-profit think tank, ProjectSafety, is focused on getting cybersecurity solutions to the forefront of the IoT and IIoT. He’s written up some insights to what attendees to his panel can expect during the event.
“IoT is different. It changes everything. It is the new extended edge that allows applications and intelligence with scale and accuracy. These tiny sensor devises are the next step in physical artificial intelligence (AI). They are out in the world telling both people and machines what they need to know and need to do. If hacked, they can manipulate or destroy physical things that can destroy entire economies or cause loss of life. IoT is not just a data base. It is an actuary in the physical world that must be authenticated, validated and secured or it could lead to very dangerous situations.
More than half of all companies are still failing at security, according to a recent report covered on IoT Evolution World. This reality confirms that something needs to be done in IoT cyber defense and quick. I cover a lot of areas in cybersecurity and know of no other industry with such a bad track record in reported breaches.
One problem is that there’s no room for a standard encryption file size or even simple processor updates patches, if an IoT device is hacked. These tiny devices were built around minimal battery life that requires tiny low powered processors with minimal flash memory. This limitation has pushed the entire cybersecurity industry to rethink how we use current security all digital technologies.
In my session at IoT Evolution Expo, I will be explaining what I will call “human to processor” and “processor to processor” bus actions as the key to real authentication, deep learning and encryption end points in new IoT cyber defense technologies. I will be discussing real, operating IoT cyber defense technologies, not just laboratory technologies.
It is always better to self-regulate and I hope the IoT industry gets the opportunity to find security solutions on its own. I work with a lot of entrepreneurs in cybersecurity and find that compliance and mandates seem never able catch up to the fast pace of cyber defense technologies. Hackers change things daily while compliance recommendations take years. Cyber defense needs to be more pro-active as does the matured working technologies that require deployment and not just analysis.
We need to find quicker and more effective ways of securing IoT. We must also find a way of putting proven cyber defense solutions in the hands of industry first and not later be caught in the quagmire of government regulation and compliance.
