Ultra-Low Energy (ULE), an extension of the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) physical layer specification that supports low power devices, is becoming an increasingly popular approach, promoted by the ULE Alliance as "a way to provide sensors, actuators and other smart devices in the Internet of Things (IoT) with two-way transmission capability over a dedicated frequency band of 1900MHz."
Today, DSP Group (DSPG) and Cloud of Things announced that they have collaborated on a Fully Managed IoT Cloud Services gateway based on DSPG's DHAN-M ULE module.
ULE is supported by an advanced family of low-power system-on-chip (SoC) and modular chipset products that provide greater range outdoors and superior coverage indoors, robust and secure RF channels, and a star network topology that eliminates the need for repeaters and makes it possible to connect devices at scale that run from one central hub.
Perhaps most importantly, ULE's high bit rate can support the data and two-way voice and video required for an increasing number of applications that connect things and people. As such, it allows devices to be controlled through voice activation while also supporting the "visual" IoT and emergency two-way conversations in applications such as security and home healthcare monitoring.
Cloud of Things, a developer of solutions around its DeviceTone technology that quickly and efficiently makes products smart, announced with DSPG that they would be using the upcoming ISC West trade show in Las Vegas, NV, to demonstrate a fully managed Internet of Things (IoT) gateway based on ULE.
An enterprise-grade device, the CoT Smart IoT Gateway securely collects sensor and equipment data from the edge of the network for localized or cloud-based analysis, relying on ULE for reliable, interference-free, full-coverage wireless communications throughout the home or office.
The announcement and demonstration at ISC West come at a time of rapid growth for connected, smart products for home monitoring and security, as well as lighting, entertainment, and smart appliances.

The increased adoption of connected devices across the home, as well as the enterprise, has created a market pull for more reliable sensor-to-hub communications in what is becoming an increasingly noisy RF environment. In addition, under pressure to meet rapidly closing time-to-market windows, product developers are looking for faster deployment options.

Along with DSP Group's highly integrated, fully certified DHAN-M ULE module, the Gateway features a fanless design, uses an embedded OpenWRT OS, has a Secure U-Boot boot loader, fail-safe FOTA, and two Ethernet ports, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity, all in a box measuring 82 x 82 x 30 mm, and weighing only 220 grams.
