Aptiv PLC Acquires Wind River Systems to Enhance Software-Defined Vehicles

By

Automotive technology supplier Aptiv PLC has completed its acquisition of Wind River Systems, a developer of software for the intelligent edge. Wind River’s technologies have seen extensive use as the company addresses challenges the industry faces, so the integration of the Wind River Studio cloud-native software platform into Aptiv’s Smart Vehicle Architecture is a logical fit.

“The automotive industry is undergoing crucial transformations,” said Kevin Clark, CEO of Aptiv. “Capitalizing on the intelligent ecosystem requires comprehensive solutions that enable software to be developed faster, deployed seamlessly, and optimized by leveraging data-driven insights.”

With more than two billion edge devices across more than 1,700 customers worldwide, Wind River’s software enables the development, operations, and servicing of mission-critical intelligent systems. Their edge-to-cloud portfolio spans aerospace and defense, telecommunications, and automotive markets. And as mentioned, its highly versatile Wind River Studio enables full product lifecycle management for edge-to-cloud use cases, as well.

“The combination of Wind River’s software, customer base and talent with Aptiv’s complementary technologies, global resources and scale will realize our vision of the new machine economy,” said Kevin Dallas, Wind River’s CEO. “We look forward to continue working with the Aptiv team to reach even greater heights and provide further growth opportunities for the empowerment of our customers and partners.”

With Aptiv and Wind River’s synergistic technologies and experience delivering safety-critical systems, they look to push closer and closer towards a software-defined future for automotive.
