A Look Back at IoT in 2023: Quectel's Strides Made for Global IoT Solutions

By

It’s time, readers – 2024 will soon be knocking on New Year’s Eve’s door.

Lately, our editorial team has dipped its toes into year-in-review type of mindsets; from MSP Today’s detailed end-of-year review (courtesy of our stellar Greg Tavarez) to two IoT-centric summaries I’ve crafted, one here on IoT Evolution and the other on Industrial IoT News, respectively.

Well, here’s another look back I’d like to take you folks on, this time involving a global IoT solutions provider I covered roughly a dozen times in 2023:

Quectel.

“Build a smarter world.” That is Quectel’s easier-said-than-done mission, but one still greatly achievable with talent and technologies available today. Quectel exists to connect devices and people to networks and services, powering digital innovation en masse along the way. Since its inception in 2010, the company’s products and services have helped build the foundational layers of a smarter and more secure world for everyone today.

Our Quectel coverage spanned most months this year; it began in the springtime with the company’s IoT connectivity plan for European customers that purchase both Quectel modules and other connectivity offerings, providing flat-rate roaming IoT SIMs for 2G, 3G, 4G, LTE Cat-M, and NB-IoT at a highly competitive one-time charge. (Plastic SIM cards are included in its pricing.) Moreover, these Quectel pre-paid EU28 IoT packages include secure end-to-end data access, APIs, self-service tools and service diagnostics, user administration, pro-active alerting, trigger management, and reporting capabilities. Read that story in full here.

Shortly thereafter came more module-specific Quectel articles. (Modules that, correspondingly, improve applications for indoor and outdoor IoT that enable lower-power connectivity critical for smart sensors and additional native IP support, for dual-mode satellite-related applications with increased reliability and ubiquitous coverage, and for use cases involving compatibility with Amazon Sidewalk, a shared wireless network that provides secure connectivity for IoT devices.

Modules and equipment-wise, Quectel later in the year debuted a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module specifically for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) developers (i.e. with large memory, multiple interface support, support for multi-channel SSL connections, etc.), as well as six brand-new 4G and 5G antennas designed to provide even more for IoT devices.

Quectel also partnered with Morse Micro back in April and then in July with Finite State to reinforce IoT device security testing.

Supplementary Quectel stories concerning niche industrial and consumer IoT applications, work on the non-terrestrial networks (NTN) IoT front, and even smarter robotic lawnmower functionalities can be found at those respective links, too.

Overall, it became clear very early in 2023 that Quectel packs one heck of an IoT punch, so to speak.

As Quectel CEO Norbert Muhrer has since described:

“Integrating game-changing technologies without sacrificing simplicity and efficiency is what we do to meet even the most robust IoT application demands.”

We look forward to more from Quectel in 2024.

To hear more industry trend-setting tech news, consider joining ITEXPO 2024, taking place February 13-15, 2024 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as part of the #TECHSUPERSHOW. Since 1999, ITEXPO has combined educational conference programming with a robust exhibit hall, networking events, and other activities, bringing together buyers and providers of business technology products and services that drive business success. Along with ITEXPO, #TECHSUPERSHOW of course includes IoT Evolution Expo, as well as Future of Work ExpoMSP ExpoGenerative AI Expo and more.
