It’s officially October, readers. Spooky season is officially upon us.
However, here’s a topic that’s anything but scary; it’s actually proving to be quite promising, as of late:
IoT roaming connectivity services.
Let’s talk about it today; specifically, through data provided by Juniper Research.
Juniper Research, for those unaware, specializes in identifying and appraising new high-growth market sectors within the digital ecosystem. Strategic forecasting is Juniper’s bread and butter; its experts provide analyses of both current and emerging opportunities related to the Internet of Things, sustainable smart city technologies, telecommunications, fintech and much more.
In a recent report, Juniper Research forecasted that operator revenue from IoT roaming will grow from $1.1 billion in 2024 to $2.2 billion by 2029.
This is a substantial jump, especially for IoT roaming (i.e. what allows IoT devices to connect to different/foreign networks — and access certain data services — using pre-defined agreements between MNOs). This, in another well-put description courtesy of Eseye founder and CCO Paul Marshall, “ensures global coverage, simplifies deployment, reduces costs, and improves reliability and redundancy.”
Here’s a smidge more context:
When SIMs (or eSIMs, iSIMs, or multiIMSI SIMs for multi-homing, i.e. connecting to multiple networks in different geographies) are able to connect to other networks successfully, that’s “roaming.” And while this doesn’t magically happen (challenges include complex regulatory issues for extensive global operations, for example), Juniper Research believes that 5G-enhanced roaming services will be, quote, “instrumental in driving this forthcoming increase” and will “account for more than 40% of total revenue by 2029.”
Also included in Juniper Research’s full assessment are details regarding the growing demand for not only 5G IoT use cases, but those involving Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) connectivity, as well as Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Enhanced Reduced Capability (eRedCap), massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC), and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC).
Overall, Juniper’s Research delivers recommendations that indicate how IoT operators and connectivity providers can improve their seamless IoT roaming services for today’s enterprises. For instance, the research identified URLLC connectivity as “vital for the success of mission-critical service delivery, as it is essential for real-time mission-critical use cases such as IoT-based maintenance in connected vehicles.”
