According to research, there are nine billion connected devices at present, and by 2020, that number is estimated to explode to 24 billion devices. This exponential growth opens up all types of service driven opportunities, delivering increased efficiencies, better customer value and improved quality of life. However, in order for the IoT to reach full potential, the industry and businesses have to change how they view and build devices.
This theme and more was the topic of discussion during the keynote opening address “Unlocking Your Business Value: Leveraging Java on Devices” at the M2M Evolution Conference & Expo, Wednesday, January 29th, lead by Peter Utzschneider, Oracle Vice President, Java Product Management. Utzschneider spoke to a packed-room about how devices enable the service driven IoT, the business challenges for the supply chain, and how Oracle is working with its customers and partners to address these challenges and unlock business value.
During his talk Utzschneider touched on the three main challenges in the IoT era – including intelligent devices, big data, and responsiveness – and just how the Internet of Things is changing devices. With the IoT, devices are now highly diverse and hardware capabilities and connectivity are rapidly changing. Moreover, the volume and value of data is gaining more importance as a business driver. However, businesses are still having difficulty taking data and making it actionable. So what’s the path to IoT service and where does Java come into play?
Televisions, printers and medical devices are just a few of the many things containing Java technology. In fact, Java Embedded technology is driving this phenomenon called the Internet of Things. And because the Java community has more than nine million developers, the opportunities for continued growth are promising.
“Java developers can bring talent and energy to bear in the market. We’ve been working with the community to have them understand that this is a great opportunity for them,” said Utzschneider.
Java can help organizations grow their revenue base and increase efficiency as it enables greater intelligence on devices and enables more portable, connected flexible devices. Because Java is one of the most popular application platforms on the planet, it offers proven longevity and ongoing investment in future development. Other benefits of Java include:
- Extended product lifecycle
- Enhanced experience
- Increased market reach
- Proven, reliable and secure
- Control over BOM and Roadmap
- Strong resource availability
- Shorter time to market
While the Internet of Things may be here, the real challenge is unlocking its business value, which Java Embedded technology has the power to do.
