Patents are the currency of technology. Companies and developers that have lots of them have better tech and have more power in the marketplace. In a recent rash of awards, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week awarded IoT developer four new patents for its NFC, mobile and security inventions. Identiv already holds more than 75 granted and pending patents.
“Google and Apple are continuing to drive Near Field Communication (NFC) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) compatibility within mobile handsets targeted at the payment and advertising markets,” said Matthew Herscovitch, CTO, Identiv. “This nearly universal technology furthers Identiv's objective of allowing people to use their mobile devices to interact with physical objects and sensors with touch or presence. These patents validate our approach to solving the problems of privacy and security in the connected world, especially for mobile NFC devices as they interact with the IoT.”
The new patents cover and NFC-enabled security system, an NFC/BLE user experience system, an RFID label and an identity authentication service. To be specific:

physical access to secure buildings by enabling users to use NFC mobile devices to open building doors and authenticate to IoT devices, reducing costs and improving security.
13/327,824 - Developing and Executing Workflow Processes Associated with Data-Encoded Tags : NFC/BLE mobile devices will be able to deliver content owners and advertisers greater analytics and end-users more relevant dynamic content, based on presence, touch and other characteristics, improving user experience and content owner productivity.
8,991,709 - Tamper-Proof RFID Label : Product owners will be able to make products tamper-proof, and therefore verify products’ safety and authenticity by using NFC/BLE enabled mobile devices. Companies will be able to protect brands from fake goods markets.
9,053,313 - Method and System for Providing Continued Access to Authentication and Encryption Services : This invention uses virtual secure elements to enable continued secure access and privacy of information, improving customer experience and productivity.
