New Intelligent Packaging Solutions to Enhance Supply Chain

By Ken Briodagh May 28, 2015

Supply chain development is frequently in the IoT news, and that’s because it’s one of the areas where innovation can have immediate and powerfully positive results.

Stora Enso, renewable solutions maker for packaging, biomaterials, wood and paper, and NXP Semiconductors, which creates secure connections solutions, have been working together to bring intelligent packaging solutions to the industry to make shipping smarter. Initial development will focus on integrating RFID into packages for tracking and engagement. Next steps will be toward brand protection and the development of tamper evidence applications.

“We have already worked on several concept cases with customers and partners within intelligent packaging,” said Karl-Henrik Sundstrom, CEO, Stora Enso. “The co-operation with NXP will enable us to bring this development closer to market and provide faster scalability in intelligent paper and board solutions.”

NXP will supply RFID-based technologies like near field communication (NFC) and ultra-high frequency (UHF) for Stora Enso to integrate into its packages so they can be easily tracked and traced through the supply chain. The goal is to make the process more transparent from end-to-end. The new sensor systems will also able to detect if the smart package has been tampered with and will be able to provide details of the tampering via an NFC-enabled mobile app.

“Our RFID technology in combination with Stora Enso's packaging solutions creates additional value to both consumers and brand owners by providing information and insights along the complete supply chain,” said Ruediger Stroh, EVP & GM, Security & Connectivity, NXP Semiconductors. “The ability of the RFID tag to detect when a package has been compromised and also provide additional product information via NFC truly enables a unique, smart, engaging brand experience and is another example of how security can be broadly implemented to protect our everyday lives.”

Supply chain will continue to be important until science finally gets us a teleporter, and the IoT has the potential to make it smoother and safer. To find out how, make sure you check out the IoT Evolution Expo, coming up in August in Las Vegas.
