IoT is Becoming Scalable, Simpler and SAFEr

By Chrissie Cluney March 31, 2020

IoT SAFE is a new standardized API designed to enable IoT devices to leverage the SIM to execute security services and store credentials, which will deliver scalability, simplicity and trust. GSMA and SIMAlliance have partnered on the IoT SIM Applet for Secure End-2-End Communication, which is designed to address the challenge of industry fragmentation.

“For over 25 years the SIM has been the ‘Root of Trust’ for the mobile industry, its security constantly evolving over this period so that today the SIM secures over 9.4 billion cellular connected devices,” said Graham Trickey, Head of IoT, GSMA. “IoT SAFE extends the security capabilities of the SIM even further to secure new IoT services end-to-end, underpinning a new generation of IoT services and billions of new IoT devices.”

The technology goes beyond scalability and security, allowing security functions to be delegated to the SIM so device makers are not solely dependent on cloud provider services to secure products and solutions.
