Semtech Launches the AirLink XR60 5G Router Solution for Rugged Applications

By

Let’s talk about Semtech and its new AirLink XR60 5G Router solution, shall we?

But first a smattering of context:

Semtech, as many in the IoT space know, is a high-performance semiconductor, IoT systems and cloud connectivity services provider. We covered quite a few Semtech-centric stories in 2023, as well; from the company’s collaboration with Kairos to harness enhanced water monitoring and leak protection technologies at Ghirardelli Square, to its launches of the XCVR Development Board and Reference Design for IoT and its broad commitments to sustainable solutions in 2023, 2024 and beyond. (Fellow team writer Greg Tavarez also covered the company’s handling of the industry’s unfair billing challenges via optimized smart metering over on one of our sister sites, Smart City Sentinel.)

So now, the XR60-specific news:

The long-story-short of it is simple. Semtech’s AirLink XR60 5G Router Solution is designed to offer 5G and Wi-Fi 6 performance in an ultra-compact and ultra-rugged design for diverse and demanding environments.

The XR60 builds on the already rugged-prepared AirLink Pro Series design to facilitate smooth transitions to 5G for industrial and utility customers (i.e. who don’t/won’t need to redesign their existing installations). The XR60 supports high-speed and efficient local/WAN data transfers and, according to the official announcement, it “embodies Semtech’s commitment to longevity.”

Additional technical benefits of the XR60 include:

  • High Performance: It’s equipped with 5G, Wi-Fi 6, 5Gbps Ethernet and USB-C technologies.
  • Ultra-Compact Design: This is ideal for space-constrained industrial settings and vehicle applications (e.g. simplifying deployments in equipment-filled public safety vehicles, for example).
  • Ultra-Rugged Design: It features MIL-STD-810H grade shock and vibration resilience, extreme temperature and humidity operating range, intrinsic safety (C1D2) and power redundancy.
  • Future-Proofing: The XR60 is a “new-gen solution” with flexible, software-defined routing functions and multi-band support.
  • Edge Intelligence: It also includes industry-standard container support for superior computing capabilities (i.e. currently a beta program).
  • Long-Term Support + Remote Management: This comes with five years of AirLink Complete offered to all XR60 routers purchased and registered in 2024.

Per Tom Mueller, Semtech’s EVP and GM of IoT System Products:

"Celebrating this release is particularly special for us at Semtech, formerly Sierra Wireless. The AirLink XR60 isn't just any router – it's the next evolution in 5G technology. Rising 5G adoption is paving the way for a more diverse array of applications, underlining the need for versatile and easy-to-install solutions. Our customers, particularly those in public safety and utilities, have expressed a clear requirement for routers that aren't just technologically advanced, but are also small, rugged and reliable under extreme conditions. The XR60 embodies our continued commitment to these sectors, ensuring that we're not only meeting but exceeding the expectations and demands of those who rely on us the most.”

The AirLink XR60 is now available commercially and is certified on AT&T (and is currently being certified on other global networks).
