ICYMI in IoT/IIoT: Four Industry Updates Before the Weekend

By

TGIF, IoTreaders!

(Okay, that’s my second attempt at combining “IoT” and “readers” while play-on-wordsing “tread”-ing through IoT, which – in the context of “IoTreaders” – almost sounds like the word “treat,” as in us treating ourselves to industry news.)

Wow, alright. This has become a bit of a stretch. I salute any and all of y’all that put up with me trying to switch up fresh IoT article intros, but I think I’ll retire “IoTreaders” for good now.

Anywho, let’s talk less about bad wordplay and more about actual news, shall we?

In our last “ICYMI” IoT round-up (read here), we covered renowned water data company Divirod joining the SAS IoT Partner Ecosystem to further water monitoring solutions and advancing early flood alerts for folks’ safety. We then talked about IoT connectivity solutions provider Soracom having announced two new GenAI services designed to accelerate the deployment of complex IoT projects. Also featured were stories involving Hewlett Packard Enterprise providing better wireless networking infrastructure for Blue Diamond Growers’ 3.3. million square feet of manufacturing facilities and outdoor crop-receiving areas, as well as NTT DATA and its Ultralight Edge AI Platform and Deutsche Telekom’s successful trial involving 5G frequencies in the mmWave range of 26GHz, benefitting specific industrial use cases.

Now, let’s look forward at today’s ICYMI, which includes the following updates:

  • The team at San Francisco-headquartered software company GridMatrix (founded by Apple engineering and operations professionals) believes we are in the middle of a “second mobility paradigm shift,” the first dating back to Henry Ford’s Model T in 1908. As they note, “Cars and horses co-existed for the next 20 years before vehicles emerged as the primary mode of urban transit. Accompanying this transition was the demand for new infrastructure to support them; paved roads, gas stations, and road networks – all of which ultimately changed the layout and composition of cities. Today’s second mobility paradigm shift isn’t much different. Advances across the autonomous, connected, electric, and shared technology verticals require the development of new infrastructure to support their deployment and adoption.” Thus, to give existing infrastructure one of many, many modernization-focused boosts, GridMatrix partnered with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Why? To deploy GridMatrix’s cloud-based software platform in order to optimize systems at Port Newark and the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal; real-time security alerts, traffic flow and vessel activity monitoring, emissions tracking, AI-powered capabilities for live camera feeds, etc. It’s a lot in the works; read that story here.
  • Airspan Networks Holdings Inc. is a U.S.-based provider of 4G/5G network densification solutions; disruptive software and hardware for 5G, end-to-end Open RAN solutions that open the doors for better vendor interoperability, the whole nine yards. Last month, Airspan announced its Airspan Portal – i.e. its latest software offering designed to improve private cellular network (PCN) management and create much simpler (and seamless) experiences for those managing critical infrastructure networks. Henrik-Smith Peterson, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at Airspan, described how Airspan Portal “is a game-changer that offers a user-friendly, single-entry-point experience, and we invite customers to experience it for themselves as they transform their network operations.” (Read the press release here.)
  • Advantech – self-described co-creators of an IoT-dominant future – devises intelligent IoT systems, hardware and embedded software, and much more. Serving industries like energy and utilities, industrial manufacturing, transportation, retail and healthcare, Advantech debuted its support for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 across its edge computing platform earlier this summer. This collaboration ensure long-term cyber protection remains close at hand, combining Windows 11 features (and exclusive Windows tools) with Advantech’s owns security products in the Advantech Power Suite. This support for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 equips customers with a best-of-both-worlds type of benefit, “empowering businesses to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving IoT landscape,” per the official announcement.
  • Lastly, a recent study conducted by Info-Tech Research Group shed light on several issues that the manufacturing industry is currently grappling with. “Industry 4.0” is a term we use often in this vein; the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) basically revolves around it. IIoT-minded manufacturers looking to scale and excel in big things Industry 4.0 are integrating advanced systems and buffing up their cybersecurity measures, and they’re traversing challenges linked to human-machine interfaces and overall management. Info-Tech’s “Transform Manufacturing by Mitigating Challenges of Industry 4.0 and 5.0” provides valuable insights and strategies for addressing such issues (as well as real-world case studies that outline how many companies are successfully overcoming IIoT challenges). More details here.

That wraps it up tor today, readers. For additional “of Things” (IoT/IIoT/AIoT, you get the gist), we encourage visiting our other sites like Industrial IoT News Hub, Smart City Sentinel and GenAI Today.

Until next time, everyone. Take good care.
