A Port of Call for the Next Mobility Paradigm Shift: GridMatrix Supports New York and New Jersey Ports with Updated Software Solution

By

Question: “What’s the story behind GridMatrix?”

The answer? Well, I’ll detail it below – it also happens to tie into recent news, so let’s get into the long-story-short of it:

GridMatrix is a San Francisco-headquartered software company founded by Apple engineering and operations professionals. The GridMatrix team’s mission is laser-focused on evolving existing transportation infrastructure for, quote, “the demands of the next 50 years.” After all (as the company itself recognizes), we as a society are in the midst of a radical mobility paradigm shift. People, energy, goods and data – where they originate, where they end up, and the journey of how they got there – are steeped in infrastructure transformations, as we speak.

In this vein, I’d like to share the following from the GridMatrix team:

When Henry Ford launched the Model T in 1908, he catalyzed the first mobility paradigm shift. Cars and horses co-existed for the next 20 years before vehicles emerged as the primary mode of urban transit. Accompanying this transition was the demand for new infrastructure to support them; paved roads, gas stations, and road networks – all of which ultimately changed the layout and composition of cities. Today’s second mobility paradigm shift isn’t much different. Advances across the autonomous, connected, electric, and shared technology verticals require the development of new infrastructure to support their deployment and adoption.” (Read more here.)

Existing infrastructure requires a boost so it can meet in-process dynamic changes, as well as the ones yet to come. Thus, new physical infrastructure and the genesis of a new digital layer of infrastructure are both on the docket so we can reach a more efficient, greener, and of course overall safer world.

And as a building block for this journey, GridMatrix has partnered with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The company will be deploying its cloud-based software platform to optimize systems at Port Newark and the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal.

The respective Ports’ operations professionals are set to use GridMatrix's software to generate real-time alerts related to security, traffic flow, vessel activity, emissions, and several other facility KPIs. Additionally, GridMatrix's software will be used to generate data over time on these same metrics, harnessing AI and live feeds from existing cameras already deployed at to generate actionable insights.

“We're thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to deploy our software at the Newark-Elizabeth port complex and serve the facility's operating professionals. This is the busiest container port on America's East Coast and key piece of critical infrastructure in the global supply chain," said GridMatrix co-founder and CEO Nick D'Andre.

Bethann Rooney, Port Director at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, added how “The backbone of our success at the Port of New York and New Jersey has been our intense focus on safe, efficient and nimble operations across our roads, rails and channels. Our work with GridMatrix will take those priorities to the next level, helping us detect and respond to issues quickly, gain operational insights from new data streams, and ultimately keep the goods powering our economy flowing.”
