What Does Morse Micro Have in Store for 2025? Take a Look at the MM8108 SoC for Next-Gen IoT

Frequent visitors of IoT Evolution World will surely recognize the name Morse Micro.

That said (as a just-in-case measure here), let’s recap:

IoT interoperability solutions provider Morse Micro is a trusted go-to when it comes to Wi-Fi; specifically, Wi-Fi HaLow-focused innovation. As it solidified many partnerships throughout 2024 (e.g. with Synergy Associates, Silex Technology, Mouser Electronics, Milesight IoT, TSMC and Quectel), Morse Micro also broke ground with two exceptional Wi-Fi HaLow demonstrations. The first then-record-setting demo took place in February in San Francisco’s Ocean Beach neighborhood, showcasing how sub-GHz Wi-Fi HaLow signals can reliably reach long distances in challenging, real-world conditions (3 kilometers). Then in September, the company shattered its own record in Joshua Tree National Park; this 900MHz Wi-Fi HaLow record made it much farther (16 kilometers). Additionally, Morse Micro debuted the HaLowLink 1 back in December, its first reference-designed Wi-Fi HaLow Access Point. This came to be via collaboration (and was jointly announced with) GL.iNet; the HaLowLink 1 provides global manufacturers, telecom partners, system integrators and developers with a plug-and-play reference design that’s poised to accelerate the commercial realization of Wi-Fi HaLow Access Points into the IoT connectivity market.

With all of this in mind, we arrive at our first Morse Micro story of 2025.

Earlier this month, Morse Micro announced the launch of its second-gen MM8108 System-on-Chip (SoC).

We lightly touched on Morse Micro’s MM6108 SoC in another recent article (read here), and now the MM8108 SoC builds on the aforementioned’s success.

According to the official announcement, “The MM8108 delivers class-leading data rates of up to 43.33 Mbps using world-first sub-GHz 256-QAM modulation at an 8 MHz bandwidth, making it ideal for a range of applications in agricultural, mining, industrial, smart home and smart city environments.” Its integrated 26dBm power amplifier (PA) — touting exceptional power efficiency and a low-noise amplifier (LNA) — “ensures exceptional performance and enable global regulatory certification without the need for external Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters.” To boot, its power efficiency significantly extends battery life and enables the uptake of solar-powered Wi-Fi HaLow connected cameras and IoT devices.

Features include:

  • 256-QAM (MCS9) operation: This improves spectrum efficiency, minimizing interference in high-density environments and enabling throughputs of up to 43.33 Mbps.
  • USB, SDIO and SPI host integration: This improves ease of integration and enables USB AP and STA dongle operation on new and existing network infrastructure. (On that note, Morse Micro also unveiled its MM8108-RD09 USB dongle reference design; key details here.)
  • Integrated PA with ‘unmatched’ transmit efficiency: i.e. high transmit output power of 26 dBm with only 325 mA current draw from a 3.3V voltage source.
  • Guaranteed low-power operation: The MM8108 SoC is optimized for battery-operated applications with significantly extended sleep times and ultra-low power consumption.
  • Enhanced security: It supports next-gen WPA3 with Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE) and GCMP encryption for robust link-layer protection.

With features like host offloading, integrated amplifiers, and industry-leading security, the MM8108 makes developing long-range, low-power IoT applications more simple and cost-effective than ever before.”
