Red Bend and Sierra Wireless Announce Open Mobile Alliance Device Management

By Calvin Azuri March 26, 2010

Interoperability between the Sierra Wireless AirVantage Services Platform and Red Bend's client software, vRapid Mobile for Firmware Updating and vDirect Mobile for Device Management was announced today.

With this interoperability network operators and M2M solution providers will be able to extend the reach of their services, managing devices equipped with Red Bend's client software through the Open Mobile Alliance device management-compliant AirVantage Services Platform.

The collaboration of  Red Bend's  OMA-DM embedded client software products, deployed in 680 million wireless devices, with the open, scalable and secure Sierra Wireless AirVantage Services Platform addresses the challenges faced by operators and M2M solution providers in managing cellular connected devices and M2M services.

The interoperability of the AirVantage Services Platform with major embedded protocols provides a full suite of M2M services and management features to operators and their partners to help achieve end-to-end control over a broad range of communication devices.

Operators and M2M solution providers will be able to quickly develop, deploy, support and manage cost-effective M2M solutions and services with the AirVantage Services Platform. A broad range of communication devices will be incorporated with multiple operating systems compatible M2M Developer Suite.

vRapid Mobile and vDirect Mobile, the leading OMA-DM compliant clients for performing firmware over-the-air updates and remote configuration and device management of mobile phones and M2M wireless devices is used by more than 60 companies globally. AirVantage platform users will now be able to manage devices equipped with Red Bend's client software to remotely provide new subscribers, configure applications and network settings, and upgrade software over-the-air.

Emmanuel Walckenaer, senior VP and GM, Sierra Wireless, said he believes that by incorporating major device management protocols available on the M2M market, the company has expanded its customers’ M2M services reach. He commits on behalf of his company to provide operators and M2M solution providers with the most advanced, open and pervasive device management services available on the market.

Lori Sylvia, executive VP, marketing, Red Bend Software, said that the collaboration with Sierra Wireless will ensure that operators and M2M solution providers have interoperable, end-to-end management systems to cost-effectively perform remote software updates and rapidly deliver new features to M2M devices in the field.
