IoT Evolution World Week in Review: SAS, Laird, US Ignite

By

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, we’ve been talking about Smart Cities, Smart Campuses, Smart People at the IoT Evolution Expo and more. Let’s get into it, shall we?

In our lead story, US Ignite has announced the expansion of its national network of Smart Gigabit Communities (SGC). Each community joining the network has made a significant commitment toward embracing next-generation smart city and Internet technologies to keep pace with the world’s rapidly changing technology and economy.

We are continuing our special series of Q&A interviews with the speaking faculty at the IoT Evolution Expo, coming up in Las Vegas July 17 to 20. This week, we spoke to James McCaffrey, Randy Van Buren, and Michael Riemer.

In a great guest post this week, our good friend Carl Ford, CEO, Crossfire Media, gave us the rundown on the IoT Security Certification program he’s designed and what students can expect to take home, in addition to the certificate of expertise.

And now, the news: Global technology company Laird is launching a new multi-wireless sensor platform that is designed to enable enterprise customers to deploy secure, stable wireless sensors in long-range Enterprise Internet of Things (IoT) applications, especially those requiring precise temperature and humidity control.

SparkCognition, a fast-growing artificial intelligence company, recently announced the close of an initial $32.5 million series B funding round. The investment was led by Verizon Ventures with key participation from The Boeing Company, through its Boeing HorizonX unit.

Sterlite Tech, a global technology company in smarter digital networks, on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Smart Cities Mission, has announced the company's selection for the implementation of Smart City solutions in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India.

SAS has announced that it’s taking steps to establish a “smart campus” at its Cary, North Carolina headquarters. Through SAS’ analytics expertise, the company’s smart campus project will improve energy usage while proactively monitoring equipment performance to boost operational longevity.

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.” In a new weekly series, we’ll be previewing chapters for you to read in the hopes that you’ll like enough to read the whole thing.

On the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with John Rossman, IoT Evolution Expo keynote speaker, author of The Amazon Way on IoT, former Amazon executive, and Managing Director at Alvarez and Marsal, a global professional services firm. Together, we discussed Rossman's book, his upcoming Keynote, and success strategies for IoT businesses. Also, this week, I talked with Saar Yoskovitz, CEO and Co-founder, Augury, and with Carl Ford, CEO Crossfire Media (@AlwaysonCarl), about Smart Cities, predictive maintenance and the upcoming IoT Evolution Expo, July 17 to 20 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
