Let's talk about data and data logging capabilities, for a moment.
As most of my readers know, data logging involves the continuous recording and storing of data; in many IoT-related cases, for instance, it's sensor data being polled.
And as readers also likely know, before IoT it was a very manual process; it often involved feet on the street, and it took quite a while.
Then we got to the first stage of IoT connectivity, and it was largely considered good enough to poll once a day, give or take. And in some instances (e.g. for Industry 4.0 applications), more frequent polling became the norm and often was an integral part of dilligent maintenance and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).
Well today, we are in the midst of AI being applied and (again, as with Industry 4.0) the more relevant data and the quicker it's logged, the better.
But we shouldn't, of course, throw the baby out with the bathwater along the way.
Here's what I mean: The reality is, the cost of IoT connectivity is dropping, and AI is improving. There's value in having both, not getting rid of one for the other.
The "baby" here is IoT data and the constant feedback. (i.e. data; either cooing or crying that something is wrong in the baby's case, and either streamlining processes or presenting data to analyze and immediately act on, in IoT's case.)
The "bathwater" is the modern, responsible infusion of AI in IoT applications.
Do you see where I'm going with this?
In a nutshell, a.) AI thrives off constant streams of information, and b.) the lifeblood of IoT is connectivity, and it's all around us these days (e.g. Wi-Fi, LoRa, satellite IoT, etc.). We have so many ways to get IoT information into the cloud so AI can do its thing. We can pay attention to (and benefit from) both.
So, let’s look for the greatest connectivity in IoT and assume there is a way to get the value from AI to justify the automation of data logging. In time, IoT will enable AI to lend results that become more and more useful.
