Samsung and Mybitat to Design IoT Solution for Enhancing Elderly Lifestyle

By Ken Briodagh April 28, 2015

Samsung Electronics and M2M solutions developer Mybitat on April 28 announced plans to develop a smart home solution for senior citizens, designed to help them remain independent longer and enhancing their quality of life.

Mybitat is a startup focused on IoT technologies, and it will work with Samsung's Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC) in Silicon Valley to build a solution that combines advanced sensors, cloud-based software and behavior analytics to monitor an individual customer’s daily routine and wellness so that elderly individuals can remain in their independent living spaces longer, and safer.

“Samsung believes the senior population can benefit from new technologies to improve their quality of life,” said Curtis Sasaki, VP Ecosystem Development, SSIC. “Our work with Mybitat has the potential to make key elements of the aging process significantly easier on individuals and families.”

The monitoring system will pair data fusion and analytics new sensors and algorithms to recognize changes in behavior or health and alert remote caregivers if assistance is required. Ideally, the end result will be easily installed into homes to tailor them for at-risk seniors.

“We believe current systems for managing aging require significant improvement,” said Mati Kochavi, Founder, Mybitat. “We want to redefine these systems and offer affordable options that open up new possibilities for aging individuals.”

SSIC is a global organization within Samsung’s Device Solutions division focused on identifying and nurturing new technologies in health and wellness, cloud and data storage infrastructure, IoT and augmented reality. SSIC's mission is to develop and accelerate groundbreaking technologies through open innovation working in collaboration with entrepreneurs and strategic partners to enhance people's lives.

This kind of smart home solution can pave the way for longer, more independent lives for seniors and other at-risk populations that wish to avoid care facilities.
