Arlo Debuts Second Generation of Smart Home Essentials

By Alex Passett October 10, 2023

Smart security company Arlo Technologies Inc. has plenty of easy-to-install products that make it simple for people to protect their homes. I covered Arlo-related news in May, when Arlo confirmed that its security subscription plans – Arlo Secure and Arlo Safe – had surpassed a milestone of 2 million total paid subscribers, which speaks to the increasing need for robust, customizable, and reliable smart ecosystems. I also wrote recently about 20% of American households now have a smart video doorbell.

Now, Arlo introduced its second generation of its Essential line of products; two smart cameras (i.e. for indoor and outdoor) and a smart doorbell, each with high-quality features (including AI-powered ones) and definitely-getting-your-money’s-worth pricing.

“Arlo prides itself in building trusted, lifelong customer relationships with innovative, award-winning security solutions that deliver an exceptional user experience," said Brad Little, Vice President & Managing Director for Arlo APAC.

Here’s the breakdown of all three offerings; I’ve condensed them and noted to which each feature applies.

The Arlo Essential Outdoor Camera and Essential Indoor Camera (2nd Generation) features:

  • Both: 130-degree viewing angle for a wider FOV
  • Outdoor: Integrated spotlight functionality
  • Both: Noise-cancelling audio for clearer, two-way conversation
  • Both: Integrated siren, triggered automatically or manually via Arlo’s app
  • Outdoor: Durable, weather-resistant design
  • Indoor: Arlo’s Automated Privacy Shield, also controlled via the app
  • Both: Simple DIY installation instructions
  • MSRP: $79.99

The Arlo Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) features:

  • Video call functionality that can be answered via smartphone
  • Visitor messaging, i.e. where voice messages can be recorded and saved
  • 180-degree FOV and night vision
  • (And, as with the outdoor camera, weather-resistant design.)
  • MSRP: $129.99

Having mentioned Arlo’s Secure subscription plan, users can take security to the next level with customizable Smart Activity Zones for additional real-time alerts, as well as time-saving automations that can be programmed to trigger events such as alarms, geofencing, preset schedules, etc.
