New Ovum Report Predicts that TR-069 is Future of Smart Home

By Ken Briodagh April 22, 2015

As Smart Home grows, standards for implementation and use become more important. In a report issued on April 22, research firm Ovum announced that TR-069 standard has a major role to play in the development of the consumer-facing IoT.

TR-069 is a technical specification that defines a communication protocol between connected devices in the Smart Home and the Auto Configuration Server, which sits inside the network and interfaces to key back office functions such as customer support, OSS/BSS, and service. Using this standard, broadband service providers can remotely configure devices, enable end-to-end delivery of new services, and cost-effectively manage and support them.

Ovum made the announcement with sponsor Axiros, a device management, TR-069, and IoT solutions supplier, from Fixed Access Summit in Berlin, Germany.

“With Axiros' focus on Smart Automation and our long history in TR-069, the future of the smart home report was a natural fit for us,” said Kurt Peterhans, CEO, Axiros. “We are proud to support such a great project with our partners the Broadband Forum and Ovum.”

The report, titled “Efficient and Automated Smart Home Rollout” surveyed global industry executives about their use of TR-069 and plans for the smart home.

“Our survey shows that service providers are already deriving significant value from TR-069, with six out of ten reporting benefits such as simplified service delivery, faster fault resolution and lower installation costs,” said Rob Gallagher, research director, Ovum. “Adoption of TR-069 will accelerate and with the number of connected devices and applications set to grow, service providers see a clear need to better visualize, support and control activity on the home network, with eight out of ten stating that TR-069 will play a significant role in their smart-home strategies.”
