Could the Internet of Things Make the World a Safer Place?

By

Even before the birth of computers in the early 1950s, human beings have been captivated by technology. With stories told throughout our modern history depicting a future where humans coexist with robots and communicating with machines is a normal part of everyday life. While artificial intelligence hasn’t taken over the world quite yet, we are already well on our way to creating smart devices that communicate with one another. The development of the Internet of Things, especially in recent years, is a shining example of human ingenuity. These innovations also prove that our vision of a more connected future is soon to be a reality, not just a story. In addition to creating a more connected world, the Internet of Things is also helping us to make the world a safer place, not just for humans, but for the environment we share it with.

The Internet of Things will help us be more environmentally friendly
As the world becomes increasingly connected, awareness regarding our relationship with our environment has grown. While there are more than enough challenges regarding how humans will produce less waste and protect our environment, the Internet of Things has already begun to tackle waste on a micro level. Smart home devices not only self-manage the way we utilize appliance in our own homes, such as heating and electricity use but also gather and analyze data, which can be used to make our homes more efficient in the future. Samsung Smart Things is just one of the many examples of major corporations that have invested, or created their own line of smart home devices that aim to contribute to more intelligent living. Users download a free app that seamlessly connects to any compatible smart devices, allowing them to control heating, lighting ad

The Internet of Things is already creating more secure and accessible spaces
While the Internet of Things is still in its nascent stages of growth, there have already been some significant developments in regards to improving security. Workspaces are have already deployed several IoT devices, such as smart locks and office access control. Companies like Kisi have harnessed the power of IoT granting managers and employees full control over the physical workspace, implementing key sharing and remote access through their connected network. Kisi is designed to work with business of all sizes, from corporations to coworking spaces. A recent Cybersecurity Insights Report conducted by AT&T found that out of 5,000 global enterprises, 85% are planning to implement IoT devices into their workspace in the near future.

The Internet of Things could improve our wellbeing
Over the last decade, wellbeing has become a hot topic in the workplace. From major corporations investing in employee wellness programs to the development of tech companies creating devices that help us cultivate a more balanced and healthy daily routine. Bellabeat is a health and fitness tracker that is geared towards women’s health specifically, which also monitors stress levels, sleep patterns, and overall activity. Companies like BellaBeat are a strong example of how wearable technology can be both on trend and accurately meet specific market needs. Connected devices generate more detailed data sets, whether it’s monitoring your fitness or employee productivity. Advanced data analysis allows both companies and individuals to understand what needs to be improved to generate more productive and positive results.

We’ve come a long way since the 1950s, and the vision of a more connected future isn’t just for science-fiction stories anymore. As technology has the power to be used for better or for worse, it’s vital that we harness the power of the Internet of Things to make our world a safer place.
