Perhaps it’s just me, but I feel like – when looking back on the highs and lows we endure – perspective and gratitude follow progress, hand in hand.
An example: When I first wrote about smart home security company Arlo back in May of 2023, my wife and I lived in an apartment complex with less-than-ideal security measures in place. My initial Arlo-centric story was a broad look at its wireless monitoring solutions, featuring one-tap emergency response, essential integrations and more. (Read it here, if you’d like.)
In the months that followed, I penned a few other stories about Arlo; its second-gen cameras and doorbells, as well as the expansive benefits of the Arlo Total Security service and perks of Arlo’s subscription plans (which, at the time, had just surpassed a milestone of two million total paid subscribers). Clearly, Arlo provides customers with many requisite (and cost-effective) devices for staying protected and securing peace of mind, something that seems to be growing more difficult to put a price on, these days.
Then, in February of 2024, my wife and I officially bought our first house together. This marked a huge step for us; we worked hard to afford a new space for ourselves, and it enabled us to abscond from the limitations associated with renting so we could make this house completely and unquestionably our own – a true safe space that could be equal parts cozy and secure.
So, what’d we do less than a week after moving in?
We acquired and installed cameras from Arlo, replete with the feature-packed subscription we deemed necessary.
To be perfectly clear, this ain’t some “#sponsored” fluff piece. This is simply me recognizing how progress – namely, us dotting our i’s and crossing our t’s as we secured our first house both in the financial sense and by way of physical home security – can legitimately open the door for perspective and gratitude, as we now feel. Arlo has been a part of that, and I felt this warranted recognition.
What else warrants it, as fate would have it, is that earlier this month Arlo announced that its AI-powered subscription service surpassed another milestone; not just 2 million subscribers (i.e. as of last summer), but 4 million as of this article’s publication.
That’s 4 million paid accounts – my wife and I now sharing but one of them – that serve, as the company itself describes, “as a testament to the benefits and value that consumers place in Arlo’s next-gen capabilities and the overall power of its service business.”
For context, several features spanning Arlo Secure, Arlo Secure Plus and Arlo Safe & Secure Pro subscriptions include:
- 24/7 Emergency Response: With a single touch, users can dispatch fire, police or medical responders to the camera’s location. If directed by the user, Arlo’s Emergency Response team can also provide critical location information to responders en route to better prepare them. (e.g. gate codes, medical conditions of family members, pet details, etc.)
- 4K Video Recording via Cloud: View 30 days’ worth of recordings that are securely stored on Arlo’s SmartCloud platform, even if the device is stolen or becomes damaged in a break-in- storm or some other physical incident.
- Smart Interactive Notifications: Users can take quick action by responding to rich notifications or viewing an animated preview of a video through the lock screen on their smartphone (or other smart device).
- Smart Activity Zones: Users can reduce unwanted notifications by highlighting specific areas on their property where they want motion to be detected, eliminating notifications from irrelevant movement such as tree branches or persistent streetside vehicle traffic.
- Advanced Object Detection with AI: Arlo processes and filters approximately 50 million events each day through advanced object detection backed (by visual artificial intelligence), allowing for better recognition of people, packages, vehicles and animals to add key context to notifications and reduce unwanted alerts.
- Priority Care and Support: Subscribers get priority technical support through the in-app Help Center with omnichannel access to phone, chat, community, or self-help articles.
In closing, I’ll quote Matthew McRae, Arlo’s CEO.
“Subscriptions to Arlo’s AI-powered service continue to grow in 2024, and we are proud to have achieved the 4 million subscriber milestone,” McRae expressed. “Arlo will continue to invest in our AI and SaaS platform and roll out numerous exciting new features and AI capabilities to further our position as the leader in the market. The team remains committed to providing an incredible user experience for current and new subscribers.”
From Arlo’s official four-million-subscriber announcement, the company stated that subscribers “can look forward to new releases later this year, including new service plans that integrate cutting-edge AI features to better improve home security.”
When we learn more, we’re sure y’all will too.
